One of the greatest things about living in beautiful San Diego is that fact that Summer really lasts through October. We get to enjoy fresh produce and warm weather for longer than most.

How about all that great produce we get from the farmers’ market? (There must be 20 of them around San Diego) Join Diane Phillips in becoming more sustainable with her class on August 6^th. Use your produce in the trend of home canning! Move over grandma!! Karen Ward will show us how on July 31^st! Count me in, as I expect lots of tomatoes from my container garden this year!

Mary AnnVitale (of La Taverna in La Jolla) is bringing back her “hands on” sausage making class! I am so excited to attend this class! Join me on September 15^th or October 3^rd. Another interesting class will be the NEW “Sous Vide” machine class with Katherine Emmenegger. As seen on Food network, this new method of cooking is a long, slow, gentle, “contained” method September 16^th.

We have been inspired by our First Lady, Michelle Obama and Jamie Oliver, and are starting our own movement for families in San Diego. We want to empower your family to cook together! Teach your children that nutritious foods taste great! We will send you home on a mission to spend more time together, creating great food, and making new memories that last a lifetime. Join Chef David Church in the Food Revelation! Ours will take place once a month, and Chef David will be preparing different menu items full of flavor, nutrients, and of course, FUN. These classes are great for children, teens, parents, and grandparents! Bring the whole family, August 20^th and September 19^th!

We wish to congratulate Erika D’Eugenio our general Manager, and Sherri Glosz our accounting manager on their 10 year anniversary with Great News! This is a milestone in any career and we are SO Proud of them. A big “Thank You” to them both, as we appreciate the loyalty, hard work, dedication and GREAT JOB they have done!

Here in town we have lots of amazing chefs that not only cook up some good eats in their restaurants, but are going to teach you how they do it, and share some secret recipes! Matt Gordon of Urban Solace,William Bradley of Addison Del Mar, Jeff Rossman of Terra, Sean Langlais of Oceanaire, Michel Stroot formerly of Golden Door (and Rancho La Puerta), and Deb Schneider of Sol, just to name a few. The cooking school @ Great News! is the place for tasty fun You’ll love this chance to learn, taste and be a star in your own kitchen.

Back by popular demand is ScanPan day on Saturday May 1^st. Join Phillis Carey for free tastings using this wonderful nonstick cookware. There will be hourly giveaways, gifts with purchase, scrumptious food, and a grand prize drawing. Join us for a fun-filled day.

The summer season always has me pulling out my trusty ice cream maker. I keep two of the insulated bowls in my freezer at all times. The quick and easy coffee or chocolate recipe is so simple. Uses only cream, milk, sugar, coffee crystals (or coco powder) & vanilla. Dissolve all of the sugar and powder in the milk, pour into the freezer bowl and turn it on. EZ! It only takes about 45 minutes for soft serve or 1 hour in the freezer for harder ice cream. Of course I always add little bits of toffee, nuts, chocolate or (chopped candy bars) just at the end. People are always amazed you made it yourself, and it is a crime how easy it really is! It makes a great summer gift.

BBQ is a huge San Diego summer pastime. The great climate is why we are all here isn’t it? Get all of the best tools, marinades, dry rubs and sauces for the perfect BBQ right here. We want you to enjoy that expensive cut of meat. Come take a class or join the BBQ event on June 12^th in the cooking school and get tips from the pros here at Great News!

A personal congratulation to our friends Lindsey, April and Holly, (one of our cooking school employees), on their upcoming nuptials. They have all registered their bridal wishes with us. Dear Friends:
Springtime is always a great time to try new things and start new projects. It’s a great time to take inventory of what you have to be grateful for and what you need (or don’t need) to make life easy and simple. Metaphorically speaking this applies to everything in life, but in the kitchen you could toss outdated spices, sharpen or replace your knives, oil or replace your cutting board, or pick up a new set of tongs for the grill! Maybe now’s the time to try some new recipes (see our cookbook section) or invite some friends for cocktails and poker! Great News! can help with all of this and more (except the poker part)!
If dining out is on your schedule, support some of your local neighborhood eateries. Some of our new favorites are: Farmhouse Café @ 2121 Adams, Better Half @ 100 University, Jaynes Gastro Pub @30^th and Adams, Urban Solace @ 30^th near University, Mama Testas on University, Bite on University, Solare @ Liberty Station, Roseville on Rosecrans and Kitchen 1540 at the L’auberge hotel in Del Mar. Devora’s 5 miles in all 50 states walking project is till going strong, 29 states to be exact! We are walking in honor of Devora’s 50^th birthday year and raising money for the adoption alliance arm of Jewish Family Service. This organization helps all families in need and placed Devora with her parents when she was just a toddler. Please join our next fundraiser class “The Many Flavors and Faces of Adoption” on April 28^th at 6pm. All proceeds from the class will go towards this worthy cause.

We are in the planning stages of many projects in our 30th Anniversary year at Great News! Yes it is true, Great News! opened July 15, 1977 in Pacific Plaza Shopping Center. We are presently planning many events to celebrate this exciting anniversary year. There will be more news to share on this situation as it develops. We are also developing our new www.Discountcooking.com retail website to replace our prior site, now closed for reconstruction. We are planning our new site to be quite different from other kitchenware sites: lots of product information and expalanations to aid in the correct item selection. We plan to offer the entire selection of items available in the store at the same competitive pricing.

Devora and I have just returned from both the Los Angeles Gift Show and the San Francisco Fancy Food Show so new items will begin to show up in the next 4 to 6 weeks. More to come as decisions are made.
